Celebrate National Wine Day with Classic Styles and Global Benchmarks

Like we really need an excuse to crack open a bottle of wine. But if you’re looking for one, we’ve got you covered: National Wine Day. While the term “national” will often refer to the USA, in the wine world these holidays have become worldwide celebrations — and your perfect excuse to enjoy a glass or 5 of fine wine. Of course, there are many wine days that come up during the year but National Wine Day is the perfect holiday (except Drink Wine Day). Why? There’s no need to get specific! Just grab your favorite wine or take the opportunity to expand your horizons and try something new.

If you’re keen on celebrating this holiday, you might already have some wines in mind. But for those who need some help or are looking for suggestions, we’ve narrowed down the selection to bring you a list of classic styles and global benchmarks guaranteed to impress.

Sparkling Wine

What’s more celebratory than a glass of sparkling wine? Plus, it’s the ideal drink to start any celebration. Below are some of our favorite options, from the classics to new discoveries perfect for those with a sweet tooth.

Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label

Let’s start with a classic: Veuve Clicquot. Specifically, the Yellow Label Brut NV. It’s an iconic Champagne that is crisp, full-bodied, and offers notes of bread dough, vanilla, apple, peach, and pecan. In fact, it’s their signature Champagne and typically the one against which all other Champagnes are judged.

The predominance of Pinot Noir provides the structure of Veuve Clicquot’s Yellow Label, while Meunier adds roundness and Chardonnay adds elegance and finesse. The intricacies don’t stop there, however. Grapes from as many as 60 different crus are used in the blending process to create Yellow Label. A large part of this blend comes from reserve wines from different harvests to ensure the consistency of the House style.

Moët & Chandon Rosé Impérial

Practically synonymous with celebrations and a truly timeless brand, Moët & Chandon had to be part of our list. This time, however, highlighting the ever-beautiful Rosé Impérial. Spontaneous, radiant, enticing, Rosé Impérial is a glamorous expression of the Moët & Chandon style, distinguished by its bright fruitiness, seductive palate, and elegant maturity.

More specifically though, you’ll enjoy an intense bouquet of red fruits such as strawberry and raspberry as well as floral nuances of rose and a slight hint of pepper. This translates to the palate beautifully with juicy berries, peach, and a subtle note of menthol.

Chandon Délice

For those who want to try something new or prefer something sweeter, we have the Chandon Délice. It’s a semi-sweet sparkling wine from the same house of Moët & Chandon: LVMH. Taking their French heritage and combining it with new world innovations, this is the one for celebrating life’s everyday moments.

The Chandon Délice has notes of tropical and citrus fruits including apple and nectarine as well as notes of violet. In fact, this can be enjoyed chilled or over ice with a garnish of your choice. We recommend either basil, ginger, or cucumber.

White Wine

If you’re not in the mood for sparkling wine but still want something light and refreshing, then white wine is the natural go-to. Whether you’re after a classic zingy Sauvignon Blanc or a creamy Chardonnay there are so many to choose from. But for national wine day, why not try something with a twist.

Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon

A classic Margaret River blend, the Cape Mentelle Sauvignon Blanc Semillon combines bright summer fruit flavors of Sauvignon Blanc with the texture of Semillon. Pour yourself a glass and you’ll discover aromas of green apples, orange blossom, green papaya, white peach, rose petal, and grapefruit elements.

These are beautifully translated onto the palate with the addition of lemon curd tart and a creamy texture that’s framed with notes of ginger and honey, ending with refreshing acidity.

Rosé Wine

We all love a good rosé — it’s refreshing, it’s crisp, and it’s beautiful to look at. Plus, it’s a fantastic option if you’re looking for something a bit deeper but not quite as bold as a red. Tip: if you’re used to white wine, rosé is a great transition wine to get used to some of the flavors found in red wines.

Minuty Rosé

What’s a more classic option than a rosé from Côtes de Provence? Chateau Minuty is one of the key producers in the region, producing top-of-the-range rosé wines. It’s also one of the last estates in the region where grapes are harvested entirely by hand. This ensures the integrity of the grapes when they arrive at the winery and therefore guarantees the quality of their wine. Made from Grenache, the king of rosé wines, and Cinsault, the Minuty blend brings you peach and crystallized orange notes. Overall, it’s a fresh, dry, full-bodied wine perfect for the summer.

Red Wine

Now what would a list of wine recommendations be without the reds. From light and juicy to bold and spicy, there’s bound to be a red wine for everyone. This national wine day we’re bringing you two options that will please no matter what your tastes.

Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir

Known for their Sauvignon Blanc, the benchmark of Marlborough Sauvignon Blancs, Cloudy Bay also produces a fantastic light-bodied Pinot Noir that has quickly become a favorite amongst Filipino wine lovers. On the nose, there are dark aromas of black cherry, raspberry, blackberry with notes of rose, violet, plums, and ripe berry fruit on the palate as well as some light herbal notes typical of Pinot Noir.

Terrazas Altos del Plata Malbec

For something more bold but still very approachable, we wanted to highlight the Terrazas Altos del Plata Malbec. This range in particular is known for its fruity expression of single varietals that have been grown at their optimum altitudes in the foothills of Cordon del Plata. The Malbec is the wineries flagship wine and a typical expression of Argentinian Malbec: floral and fruity with notes of violets, black berry, plum, black pepper, and chocolate.
